When He Flourished 3:31-4:3
Shamgar comes right after Ehud ends his judgeship. There is not much known about him. The conditions are mentioned. Jabin, the king of Canaan, was putting the area under his authority. He mightily oppressed the Hebrews
Who He Fought vs. 31
Who he fought was the Philistines. The Philistines are now making their way into history and will be a thorn in the side of Israel for many years.
An oxgoad is a cattle prod: a stick with a sharp end that pierces flesh. He killed 600 Philistines.
Where He Failed 5:6-8
He failed by not continuing the battle. The war is not one with just one victory.
Because the enemy regained ground, people had to avoid the roads and the villages were uninhabited
