Biblical Interpretation

II Peter 1:20-21

Two Main Ways of Interpretation

Literal – taking everything literally, understanding that even figurative language is interpreted literally. (This is the right way)

Allegorical – spiritualizing the text. It looks for meaning beyond the written text.

How to Properly Interpret

II Timothy 2:15 – We are to study to show ourselves approved unto God.

It takes work.

There is a right way to divide truth and a wrong way to divide truth.

Questions to Ask in the Text

Who is speaking?

Who is the audience?

What are they saying?

How did the audience understand it to mean?

What application was expected from the audience?

What do we learn about God from the passage?
