11 The Mounts of Blessing and Cursing

The Mounts of Blessing and Cursing

Judges 8:30-35

This was a major event that was given a great amount of emphasis.

The Copying of God’s Word vs. 30-32

Joshua went to Mount Ebal and began copying the first 5 books of the Bible on the rocks of the mountain.

This was ordered in Deuteronomy 27:1-8

God wants people to know the word of God and desires to have a copy available for every person.

The Mounts of Blessing and Cursing vs. 33

After the Word of God was copied, Joshua brought all the children of Israel together on the two mountains; Ebal and Gerizim and addressed them.

Deuteronomy 27:11-13 gave how the people were divided.

The two mountains stood about 3000 feet over sea level. In the valley between the mountains stood the ancient city of Shechem. On the Gerizim side of the mountain was lush and green and represented the blessings of God’s word. The Ebal side of the mountain was barren and rocky, and pictured the curses of God’s word.

Deuteronomy 11:26-32

The Reading of God’s Word vs. 34-35

Deuteronomy 27,28,29 & 30 all cover the blessings and curses that was to be pronounced that day.

If we obey God, there will be blessings, if we disobey there are curses.

Deuteronomy 28:15-20

If we don’t know God’s word, we don’t know what we are to do and not to do. God’s word serves as a guide.

This was not just to be read to the men, but to the women, children and even Gentiles.
