Gideon’s Fleece
Judges 6:33-40
The Spirit of the Lord Directed vs. 34-35
God had already told Gideon that God was going to use him to defeat the Midianites. Twice God promised Gideon His presence.
God filled Gideon with the Spirit and had Gideon call the soldiers to him.
Gideon’s Disobedient Desire vs. 36-40
The Angel of the Lord, who is Jesus, directly commanded Gideon what to do. The Holy Spirit brought all the soldiers to advance, but still Gideon bulked at the thought of moving forward.
He wanted confirmation that this was indeed God’s will. So he asked signs from heaven.
The first sign he asked for was to place a fleece on the ground and in the morning, only have the fleece wet and the ground dry. In the morning, the ground was wet the fleece had a full bowl of water.
The next day Gideon asked for the fleece to be dry and the ground wet, just to double check the results.
Why did Gideon ask this, especially when Jesus in person told Gideon what to do? The answer is because Gideon didn’t want to obey. For him God’s word was not enough.
The Word of God is Definitely Better – II Peter 1:16-21
Peter recounts the amazing account of Jesus being transfigured. Then he stated we have a more sure word of prophecy. The Bible is better than any experience or sign.
