4 BC)<\/p>\n<p>Son of Antipater and an Edomite woman<\/p>\n<p>Antipater gave Jews military and tax exemption<\/p>\n<p>When Julius Caesar dies, someone poisoned Antipater<\/p>\n<p>Romans resume control and Herod is installed<\/p>\n<p><em>Herod the Master Politician<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Herod had to choose between Octavian and Marc Antony as successor of Rome<\/p>\n<p>Herod chose Antony<\/p>\n<p>When Octavian won, Herod sailed to Rome and came back in a better position in Rome<\/p>\n<p>Herod tried to be a servant of the Jews and Romans<\/p>\n<p><em>Herod the Master Builder<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Herod overtakes a project to refurnished the temple and keep the Jews happy<\/p>\n<p>Jews never had to pay homage to Caesar because of Herod\u2019s dealings<\/p>\n<p>To keep the Romans happy:<\/p>\n<p>He kept order; Honored Caesar<\/p>\n<p>Built Caesarea Maritime<\/p>\n<p>Seaport and deepest and best man made harbor in the Mediterranean<\/p>\n<p>Permitted the Jews to have yearly feast and customs, even though it stirred up revolts<\/p>\n<p>Herod had a fortress to protect himself from the Jews<\/p>\n<p><em>Herod The Evil Master<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Married into the Hasmanean line, Miriamne<\/p>\n<p>Later executed his brother-in-law, mother-in-law, and his sons by Miriamne<\/p>\n<p>No wonder he could slaughter all the babies<\/p>\n<p>He wanted to be mourned when he died, so he had standing orders for when he died, to kill 70 of the most prominent Jews, so the whole nation would be in mourning<\/p>\n<p>Passed on the kingdom to his 3 sons<\/p>\n<p>Herod Archelaus &#8211; Inherited most important part &#8211; Samaria, Judaea, and Idumaea<\/p>\n<p>Herod Antipas &#8211; Galilee and Paraea<\/p>\n<p>Philip &#8211; Ituraea (Bashan)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Herod Archelaus<\/strong> Matt 2:19-23<\/p>\n<p>After a series of complaints by the Jews, Romans relieved him with a procurator (governor)<\/p>\n<p>Procurators &#8211; Pontius Polite, Felix, Festus<\/p>\n<p>They set up office at Caesarea Maritime<\/p>\n<p>He was a wildman<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Herod Antipas<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Superstitious Sadducee and an immoral man<\/p>\n<p>Married Herodias, Philip I\u2019s former wife<\/p>\n<p>Salomne was daughter of Philip I and Herodias<\/p>\n<p>Mark 6:14-28 16<\/p>\n<p>Luke 23:6-12<\/p>\n<p>Herod was in Jerusalem because he was a Sadducee and it was Passover<\/p>\n<p>Pilate sent him to Herod to get out of judging Jesus<\/p>\n<p>Herod wanted to see a trick or a miracle<\/p>\n<p>Jesus saw a man who\u2019s father tried to kill him, and killed his friend, John the Baptist<\/p>\n<p>Dies in AD 40<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Herod Agrippa I<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He takes over when his father, Herod Philip II, dies in AD 37<\/p>\n<p>In AD 40, Herod Antipas dies, Herod Agrippa took over his lands<\/p>\n<p>In the next couple of years, he obtains Samaria, Judaea<\/p>\n<p>He restored the throne\u2019s glory<\/p>\n<p>He has son Herod Agrippa II, and daughters Drusilla, Bernice, and Miriamne<\/p>\n<p>Kept Jewish law, but persecuted the Christian Church<\/p>\n<p>Acts 12:1-4<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>2 killed James<\/li>\n<li>3 tried to kill Peter<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Vs. 20-23 Herod dies because of pride<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Drusilla<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Name means watered by the dew<\/p>\n<p>Great granddaughter of Herod the Great<\/p>\n<p>Youngest of Agrippa I daughters<\/p>\n<p>Most beautiful of all the daughters, Bernice hated her<\/p>\n<p>Got married at 15 to King Aziz<\/p>\n<p>She remarried to Felix<\/p>\n<p>Felix started off as a slave, and worked his way to governor<\/p>\n<p>She bore a child named Agrippa<\/p>\n<p>When Paul stood before Felix, she was 20 years old in an illegal marriage<\/p>\n<p>Acts 24:24-26<\/p>\n<p>People believe that if Drusilla wasn\u2019t there, Felix might have been saved<\/p>\n<p>Drusilla hated Paul, and convinced Felix not to let Paul go<\/p>\n<p>Rumored she was killed 20 years later in Italy in Pompey when Mt Vesuvius erupted<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bernice<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Comes from the word \u2018nike\u2019 or victory<\/p>\n<p>Oldest daughter of Agrippa I<\/p>\n<p>First married Marcus<\/p>\n<p>2nd husband was her brother Agrippa II<\/p>\n<p>She will eventually leave Agrippa and marry a Ptolemy<\/p>\n<p>She will then leave Ptolemy and go back to Agrippa<\/p>\n<p>Then she leaves Agrippa and lives with Vespasian, A Roman Emperor<\/p>\n<p>Then she moves to Vespasian\u2019s son, Titus<\/p>\n<p>She was present when Paul gave testimony to her brother Agrippa<\/p>\n<p>Acts 25:13-26:2, 19-32<\/p>\n<p>Festus didn\u2019t understand Jewish law and need something to write up to explain why Paul was sent before Caesar<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Herod Agrippa II<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Takes the throne at age 17<\/p>\n<p>Died without an heir and finished the Herodian line<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>James 4:1-10<\/p>\n<p>We either live our live by force or by faith<\/p>\n<p>The world is always against God<\/p>\n<p>In the various situations we find ourselves in, our best answer is to cry out to God and snuggle close to Him, then be obedient when He tells us to do something<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Herodian Line Mark 8:15 Herod the Great (r 40 BC &#8211;
