{"id":498,"date":"2017-05-10T20:31:24","date_gmt":"2017-05-10T20:31:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.brnsermons.com\/scottybackhaus\/?post_type=ctc_sermon&#038;p=498"},"modified":"2017-06-13T20:33:06","modified_gmt":"2017-06-13T20:33:06","slug":"06-barnabas-son-of-consolation","status":"publish","type":"ctc_sermon","link":"https:\/\/brnsermons.com\/scottybackhaus\/sermons\/06-barnabas-son-of-consolation\/","title":{"rendered":"06 Barnabas: Son of Consolation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><em>Barnabas: Son of Consolation<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Acts 9:23-31<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A Sincere Man<\/strong> \u2013 Acts 4:34-37<\/p>\n<p>There was a stir in the early church were church members gave of their possessions for the purpose of furthering the gospel<\/p>\n<p>One of these people was Joses or Joseph, of whom the apostles surnamed Barnabas<\/p>\n<p>He was a Levite who had estates on the island of Cyprus<\/p>\n<p>This shows how failed Judaism was to have a Levite, who was not supposed to own land, not only own property but own in a foreign land, not the Promised Land<\/p>\n<p>This name had the idea of \u201cson of consolation, son of exhortation, and the son of prophecy\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is the same names used for the Holy Spirit. Barnabas\u2019 character so reflected God that the Apostles identified him with God\u2019s spirit as a comforter and as man gifted to communicate God\u2019s word<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Sympathetic Man<\/strong> \u2013 Acts 9:26-31<\/p>\n<p>It had been three years since anyone had heard of Saul. Now he was back, and worse he was in Jerusalem. Now he was seeking to join the fellowship of the church!<\/p>\n<p>It was Barnabas who opened his door to Saul. None of the other Apostles or leaders wanted anything to do with Saul.<\/p>\n<p>It was Barnabas who spoke up for Saul and introduced him to Peter<\/p>\n<p>For the next two weeks Peter spent time with Saul. Peter probably gave Saul his memories and Saul expounded Peter the word of God. (Galatians 3:18)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Spiritual Man<\/strong> \u2013 Acts 11:19-24<\/p>\n<p>Word came back to Jerusalem that believers had formed a work in heathen Antioch.<\/p>\n<p>Antioch was a Greek city known for heathenism and the home of the Roman perfect and his court. It was the seat of idolatry and held the same grove of Daphne.<\/p>\n<p>The apostles decided to investigate this beginning at Antioch. The leaders choose Barnabas to see what was going on.<\/p>\n<p>He wasn\u2019t critical of the new work.
