Hannah For This Child I Prayed
I Samuel 1
Barrenness vs. 1-8
This story is placed in the last of the book of Judges. Disobedience and ungodliness are rampant throughout the land.
Elkanah was a Levi, from the family of Kohath. He was part of the family who was to take care of the furniture in the Tabernacle.
Instead, he is living for himself and topping it off he had two wives: Hannah and Peninnah. Peninnah could have children, but Hannah was not able to have children.
Peninnah made life miserable for Hannah, provoking her about not having children.
Brokenness vs. 9-16
Hannah wanted a child so badly. But God had not blessed her yet.
She went to the Tabernacle and prayed that if God gave her a child, she would give the child back to God.
Also, she would have him take a vow of the Nazarite, someone who dedicated their life to the Lord.
The High Priest, Eli came out and saw Hannah praying. He accused her of being drunk.
Blessedness vs. 17-28
God heard her prayer. She knew it, not because of a backslidden priest, but because of her heart. Her countenance changed.
Samuel means “asked of God” Hannah didn’t forget her promise. After he was weaned, probably about five years old, Hannah brought him to the Tabernacle to serve God.
God used Samuel as a great prophet transitioning out of the Judges Period.
