God Rendered the Wickedness of Abimelech

Judges 9

Abimelech’s Rise to Power vs. 1-6

Abimelech started by convincing the people of Shechem that it was better to have one person rule over them then 70 people.

He surrounded himself with vain and light people. These are not wise counselors, but people who would tell Abimelech what he wanted to hear.

To consolidate his power, he killed the rest of the Gideon’s children. He missed the youngest, Jotham.

Jotham’s Warning vs. 7-21

Jotham went to the top of Mount Gerizim, which overlooks Shechem, and gave a parable. In this parable is says how the trees asked the lowest plants to rule over them.

He followed up by telling the men of Shechem if they did right, then good on them. If not there was going to be a fight between Shechem and Abimelech.

The Fall of Abimelech vs. 22-57

After three years, there was a break between Shechem and Abimelech. They rebelled against Abimelech and he retaliated.

He began a killing spree, killing people in fields. He found a group of them in a tower and set fire to it, killing everyone in them.

They went to the city of Thebez and attacked that city. As he came against the tower, a lady tossed a millstone on his head.
