The Altar Ed

Joshua 22

Dismissal of the 2 ½ Tribes vs. 1-9

The 2 ½ tribes kept their promise in using their men to help fight for the land. After the land was gained, Joshua released them to go home.

The Accusation of the Tribes vs. 10-20

Once home the 2 ½ tribes erected an altar. Others from the other side of Jordan saw this altar and immediately were concerned. According to the law, sacrifices could only be done at the Tabernacles / Temple. If this altar was used it would violate scriptures, and the people were afraid it would rain done God’s judgment upon the people.

They sent Phinehas, the son of the High Priest, and 10 princes to confront the other tribes.

In confronting them, they brought up the past events.

Vs. 17 They bring up when the people mixed with the Moabites, and began to serve the false god Peor. God sent a plague among the people for that offence.

Vs. 18 The people are afraid for all the tribes.

Vs. 19 If there is false worship occurring on that side of the river, come to our side.

Vs. 20 They bring up Achan and how his sin effected everyone else.

The Defence of the Tribes vs. 21-29

The tribes built an altar not to use, but to remind the children and decedents never to forget the Lord.

The Absolution of the Tribes vs. 30-34

This satisfied Phinehas and he settled the judgment that no sin was done.

Just because something is different doesn’t make it necessarily wrong.
